Ten Days In…

April 15, 2008

Hi everyone, this is the first posting on our trip. I’m still getting the hang of this site, and will update this website more over the next few months. The short list so far: Tallahassee, New Orleans, Austin… Thanks to Emily, Mike, (both of them), Earl, and Old School Bob, and Cathy for a great beginning to our travels! -Carey

Here’s a little taste…

A Day in the [Archeological] Field: Shell Circles and Indian Mounds; Ancient Village sites on the Floridian Panhandle

Archealogist Mike Russo explains findings inside an Indian Mound on the Florida Panhandle

Archeologist Mike Russo, seen here explaining some features in an Indian Mound in the Florida handle, was kind enough to show us his project on Tyndalle Airforce base. Thanks to a law passed, government agencies are now required to discover and preserve archealogical sites hidden beneath the grid.

Another archealogist, Theadra, takes elevation readings.

Here, another archeologist, Theadra, on Mike Russo’s team, takes survey readings to establish the topography of the site. The team allowed us to volunteer for the afternoon; unfortunately we have no photos of either one of us in action with the machetes, used to clear sightlines for surveying.

Song of the Open Road
By Walt Whitman

1
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,
Strong and content I travel the open road.

The earth, that is sufficient,
I do not want the constellations any nearer,
I know they are very well where they are,
I know they suffice for those who belong to them.

(Still here I carry my old delicious burdens,
I carry them, men and women, I carry them with me wherever I go,
I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them,
I am fill’d with them, and I will fill them in return.)
